February 2016 - Future Event Plans

We want to thank everyone who helped with 50th Anniversary celebration in November. It was a great event especially when done in conjunction with the great Thanksgiving Feast. We are looking forward to our next celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the church charter hanging in Advent's Narthex.  This event will be t-shirt Sunday and everyone is asked to wear their 50th anniversary shirts.  We will also be inviting everyone to sign a document commemorating the original charter signing.

The committee is working on future activities for July, September and December. We are completing plans for catered prime rib/chicken breast sit down dinner in September when our Bishop will be with us.

In honor of our church's anniversary, we will also be making donations to seminarian scholarship... the monies will be split between Ella, our future seminarian, and the ELCA Fund for Leaders in Mission.

Shirts and tote bags are available all this year and we can order any adult and children's sizes! We look forward to all of us celebrating all these events in our church history together.

Impressed also were CARTER and LYNN Pederson, charter members from the St. Louis area who came to share the celebration. They commented on the warmth and welcome afforded by the people and leaders of the congregation, and the rich resources of worship, music, programs, staff and willing helpers we have at Advent

Wear it Proudly!

The Committee has developed several Memento items with the ANNIVERSARY LOGO and theme: Tee Shirts, Golf Shirts and Tote Bags Be sure to check them out!

November 2015 - Let the Party Begin!

We gather for our FIRST event, on Sun, Nov 15 to commemorate the very FIRST worship service of this community of faith, held on Sunday, November 14, 1965. Pastor Norman COOLING had been canvasing the growing Advent Community for several months, inviting one and all to be part of a new Lutheran congregation. Almost 100 folks, adults and children gathered that day in the basement of the MORTON COMMUNITY BANK. Come and learn more about the beginnings of this congregation and share our JOY in the heritage of faith!

Our special guests for the November 15th worship and feast will be Rev. Bill & Cheryl PETERSON. While a member of Advent, Bill discerned a call to ordained ministry and headed off to Luther Seminary. We are thrilled that both he and Cheryl could be with us on this special day. Bill will preach at both services, and share some memories during the Thanksgiving Feast

Wear it Proudly! The Committee has developed several Memento items with the ANNIVERSARY LOGO and theme. Sales begin on the 15th: Tee Shirts Golf Shirts Tote Bags Be sure to check them out!

During the Feast, we will hear from several charter members of the congregation: CARTER PEDERSON. He and his family were charter members of the congregation. Carter was on the original church council and intimately involved in the life of the congregation until they moved to St. Louis area in 1973. He and his wife, Lynn, live in Manchester, MO. In addition, we will hear from BEV POTTS & ARLENE PARR, charter members who still call Advent home.

ANNIVERSARY MISSION PROJECT: kicking off on November 15. SEMINARY SCHOLARSHIP focus. We as an ELCA church community are in great need of inspired, capable, and well prepared pastors. The ELCA sponsors 8 excellent seminaries at which most of our candidates for ministry are trained. Needed is MONEY to support those candidates. As with all forms of higher education, tuition and expenses at seminary has skyrocketed. It often exceeds $30,000 a year. That created a daunting burden of debt for leaders who often serve in places with moderate or minimal compensation. As part of a five year capital campaign, “Always Being Made New”, the ELCA has designated a goal of $15 million to build up a churchwide FUND FOR LEADERS IN MISSION. The goal is to produce an endowment large enough to subsidize seminary costs for many if not all of our ELCA clergy candidates. Brochures and offering envelopes will be available beginning that day throughout the Anniversary year.

October 2015 Announcer - Progress Update

The committee continues to work diligently on several aspects of our emerging Celebration:

Putting final touches on the November 15, with Rev. Bill PETERSON as our guest at both worship services and at the THANKSGIVING FEAST that day.

THEME motto for the Celebration: the committee selected TWO: “JOY in the Past AND FAITH in the Future” AND a take-off from our mission statement: NURTURING God’s people, SPREADING God’s Word, SERVING God’s world.  The Mottos and Logo will be featured on memento T-shirts, golf shirts and cloth bags which will be for sale later this Fall.

A special MISSION PROJECT was also selected: “Fund For Leaders” of the ELCA “ALWAYS BEING MADE NEW” Emphasis. All gifts will be put in an endowment fund for scholarships for Seminarians preparing for ordained ministry. More on this during our November 15 Kick-Off celebration.

Two other ways you can assist in making our 50th a party to remember!

1). Volunteer to help organize ONE of the 5 events. We have specific groups within Advent who will facilitate the food and fellowship portion of each event. Pick an event and offer to assist whatever group is in charge that day!

2). Provide photos, documents or other memorabilia from Advent’s history. If you have such items, or know of someone who does, THANK YOU for letting us know. We would like to borrow such items, use them during this year plus celebration, make copies for our archives and then return them.

Members of the committee are: Ruth Rohweder, Ruth Smith, Art Herm, Jolynn Lottman, Bev Potts, Arlene Parr, Karen Darling and Sally Ferko. John Ziah and Judy Stegmaier are co chairs.

September 2015 Announcer - Planning Progress

The committee continues to work diligently on several aspects of our emerging Celebration:

Putting final touches on the November 15 event, with Rev. Bill Peterson as our guest at both worship services and at the THANKSGIVING FEAST that day.

Developing the mailing list including former members and others we think would be interested in taking part.

Assembling items for a historical exhibit, which will be housed in the Sunday School room opposite the Family Life Center.

Your help with each of these projects is much appreciated. Also, we ask your input and ideas for three projects for SEPTEMBER:

Heeding God’s call to live not for ourselves but for the world, we want to identify one or two special ministries as an Anniversary mission outreach. You will be hearing a lot more about this at worship during September, put on your thinking caps, and get those artistic juices going!! Finally, two other ways you can assist in making our 50th a party to remember!

1). Volunteer to help organize ONE of the 5 events. We have specific groups within Advent who will facilitate the food and fellowship portion of each event. Pick an event and offer to assist whatever group is in charge that day!

2). We are also looking for photos, documents or other memorabilia from Advent’s history. If you have such items, or know of someone who does, THANK YOU for letting us know. We would like to borrow these items to use during this year-long celebration, make copies for our archives and then return them.

Members of the committee are: Ruth Rohweder, Ruth Smith, Art Herm, Jolynn Lottman, Bev Potts, Arlene Parr and Sally Ferko. Co-chairs are John Ziah and Judy Stegmaier. NEXT MEETING is Wednesday, September 2 at 6:30PM in the church library. ALL MEMBERS are invited to join us!

August 2015 Announcer - How You Can Help

Our committee has met twice and outlined a 5 weekend celebration beginning in November 2015. Our First celebration is November 15, when Rev. Bill PETERSON will be our guest at both worship services and at the THANKSGIVING FEAST that day. Bill was a member and choir director at Advent before he went into the ministry. He spent all of his ordained ministry in Indiana. He and his wife Cheryl ( who was Advent’s organist for several years) are retired and live in Quincy, Indiana. That day we will also welcome former members Carter and Lynn PEDERSEN, who will share their memories of Advent’s early history. The Pedersens live in Manchester, MO, a suburb of St. Louis.

HOW YOU CAN HELP the committee:

1). Submit names and contact information for family members, former members of Advent, or anyone else you think might be interested in taking part. Please e- mail or send that information to the church office, with the byline “Anniversary Contact List”.

2). Volunteer to help organize one of the 5 events. We would like to have a different group of members overseeing each event. That allows more folks to be involved in leadership for limited time commitments.

3). We’re also looking for photos, documents or other memorabilia from Advent’s history. If you have such items, or know of someone who does, PLEASE contact the committee. We would like to borrow these items, use them during this celebration year, plus make copies for our archives and then return them.

4). Organize this memorabilia into displays and a timeline.

5). Contribute ideas for a logo (design) and motto for the Anniversary. We will be asking for your help with this through August and selecting both by the end of the month.

6). Identify one or two MISSION PROJECTS as part of the celebration. We say thanks to God for our abundant blessings by generosity and sharing with others. We are looking for YOUR suggestions for local, national or international mission projects.

7). Anniversary “webmasters”. WE would love to see 1 or 2 people develop and maintain an Anniversary “site” on both the website and Advent youth Facebook.

Current members of the committee are: Ruth Rohweder, Ruth Smith, Art Herm, Jolynn Lottman, Bev Potts, Arlene Parr, Sally Ferko. Co-chairs are John Ziah and Judy Stegmaier, Please contact our co-chairs if you have suggestions, would like to serve on the committee and/or would like to help in any of the ways outlined above. Next planning meeting is Wednesday, September 2 @ 6:30pm. BE SURE TO MARK November 15 on your household calendar and JOIN US!!!!
