Church history

Advent formally started as a mission congregation on May 1, 1966 under the guidance

of the Reverend Robert C. Cooling. The Board of American Missions designated Morton as a

mission field in June of 1965. He found 50 people that were interested in organizing the

The first service was held on November 14, 1965 in the basement of Morton Community Bank.

Because of the Advent season approaching, the chosen name for the new mission congregation

was Advent Lutheran Church. In March of 1966 forty families signed the charter.  We broke ground for the new church at Hazelwood and Main Street on Palm Sunday, April 7, 1968. The cornerstone was cemented on September 15, 1968. We entered the new building December 8, 1968.

Since more Sunday School space was needed it was decided to build a parsonage, which would

include several Sunday School classrooms in the basement, on the adjacent acreage to the church.

The original parsonage was on Johnson Street.  The new parsonage was built in 1973 and sold in

1977 to add to our new building program.  The Reverend Allen E. Juenger became pastor of

Advent in September of 1973. Pastor Juenger  resigned in 1978.

In 1975 we voted to start a drive to raise 150,000 in three years. The Building Program Survey

taken in the summer of 1976 revealed that we would build a new sanctuary and remodel the old

for Sunday School area.  It was decided to build a 300 seat Sanctuary, enlarge the Narthex, add office space, the library and additional bathrooms. The ground-breaking for the new Sanctuary was held March 12, 1978.

The Reverend Daniel Tuhy was installed as our new minister on May 1, 1979.  In 1992 Pastor Tuhy indicated a desire to spend more time in personal study and it was time to begin a search for a new Pastor to lead the flock at Advent.  In June of 1992 we were blessed when Pastor Art Larson and his family moved to Morton. He agreed to serve as Interim Pastor until a new Pastor was approved and installed.

January 1993 brought a new year. On April 18, 1993, Steven J. Erickson was installed as the

new Pastor at Advent.  A long-range planning process was begun in 1994. Data was gathered within the congregation and the Morton community. A Mission Statement was approved in 1995 which

focused on the words Nurture, Spread and Serve.  A strategic planning committee was formed which continued the process in the development of a five-year plan for Advent. This was approved by the congregation in September 1996.  A decision was made by the congregation in 1999 to expand the current facility. The addition would include education classrooms, new fellowship hall, new kitchen and additional storage space. A fund appeal was successfully completed in April 2000. The new building was dedicated in December 2001.

In August 2005, Pastor Erickson was called to a new church closer to his family. A real blessing

was bestowed on Advent with Pastor Barbara Ziah as our Interim Pastor. She began her duties

in September 2005.  The Advent congregation celebrated its 40th anniversary in April 2006, 40 years from our very first worship service.

In January 2007, Pastor Dennis M. O’Brien accepted our call. He began his duties on

January 22, 2007, and installed on February 18, 2007.

We have had two members enter the Lutheran Ministry from our congregation. They are

William Peterson in 1987 and Barbara Ziah in 1993.
