The purpose of the Service Committee of Advent Lutheran Church  is to raise awareness of the needs of others and reach out in tangible ways to meet those needs, both among our members and in the greater community.

Little children, let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth I John 3:18

In order to do this, the Service Committee actively works with the congregation, both adults and youth, to engage in a variety of activities throughout the year including:

Adopting the Single Parent Program –Over the past year, Advent has provided ongoing support to this program of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois by highlighting its services to the congregation,
raising money through a church wide garage sale, collecting school supplies for the children in the program, providing Christmas gifts to children and parents, and developing a collection closet providing ongoing collections of cleaning supplies, interview clothes for the parents, and clothes for the kids.

Developing relationship with the South Side Mission – This year Advent began a working relationship with the Mission by joining their G210 Partnership committing to monthly financial support of this agency.  Church members also began to volunteer at the organization’s  Morton Mission Mart and plans are in motion to further develop this relationship by planning work days at the Mission site in Peoria.

Pumpkin Festival Food Tent – Advent provides a crew to work in the food tent at the Morton Pumpkin Festival each September.

Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Quilts and Health Kits – Advent continues to support this vital global outreach of Lutheran churches by making and collecting quilts and health kits.

“Operation Christmas Child” Boxes – Prior to Christmas, Advent collects shoe boxes full of toys, clothing items, and school supplies to support the Samaritan’s Purse worldwide distribution.

World Hunger Appeal and We Care, Inc. – during the Lenten season, Advent focuses collections on monetary donations for the ELCA World Hunger Appeal and non-perishable food items for We Care food pantry here in Morton.

Service Committee continues to educate church members about various giving & service opportunities locally and throughout the world.  We know that the needs of others in this turbulent, conflicted world never end.  With that in mind, we welcome new ideas and suggestions.
