Sunday School

Advent offers Sunday School classes for youth from pre-K through high school, during September through May.  For the younger kids, we use the Spark Rotation program, focusing on a different Bible story each month.

The children's Sunday School also puts on a musical program twice a year, once in December and once in May.

A special Learning Forum program is offered for Adults during the regular Sunday School hour.  Topical studies on a variety of subjects are offered through the school year.

The classes are enjoyed by all, as Advent's loving Sunday School teachers and students reflect on what God's Word means to them in their own daily life experiences

Sunday school kicks off on the first Sunday after Labor Day and generally concludes on the Sunday before Memorial Day.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School is in session for one week each summer often during the month of August. It meets in the evening.  Children from the congregation and the local community  join a devoted cadre of adult leaders in dinner, games, music, learning stations, crafts and closing worship.   This Summer we cooperated with the United Church of Christ in Morton on a June program. The feedback was so positive that this has become an annual tradition.

Confirmation and First Communion

Confirmation at Advent is a dynamic and growing ministry for Junior High School youth and their families.  Our program follows the philosophy and the curriculum resources of a cutting edge ministry of faith formation,  FAITH INKUBATORS.

Confirmation meets for Theme Nights,  Small Group Nights and Servant Outings.  Three major components of the program are hands-on, high energy learning sessions, small groups led by trained lay-leaders,  and active involvement of the family.

Our target "audience" is 7th and 8th graders.   We gather on from September through May and most often meet Sunday afternoon or evening.

Another highlight of the year is Confirmation Camp,  a six day experience at the Lutheran Outdoor
Ministry Center in Oregon Illinois,  during the third full week of June.  Each  young person commits to attending this experience at least once during their confirmation experience.

First Holy Communion  Advent Lutheran Church welcomes children to the Table of the Lord after they have completed a preparation program with the Pastor.  The recommended age for this is 5th grade,  although this guideline  is flexible and families can elect to involve their children in Communion either earlier or  later.   A four session program of meetings with the pastor are scheduled,  generally during the Spring each year.  After completing these sessions,  the children are welcomed to their first Communion with a special ceremony on a Sunday of their choice.

Mentoring Program

Youth in Junior High and High School have the opportunity to join the Mentoring Program at Advent, in which adult members of the congregation are paired with the youth to form a developing faith releationship.  The mentor pairs meet during Sunday School on the first Sunday of the month, and are encouraged to engage in service projects or other church events together.

High School Youth

This part of Advent's ministry is both a high priority and a growing part of what we do.

We an expansive Youth Fellowship program.  We work to enhance and expand a developing, several pronged outreach to youth  (and their parents).  This includes a varied and engaging Sunday School program, embedding youth in more meaningfully in worship through music groups and enlisting them as helpers and leaders; regular fellowship outings, servant projects and  some weekend away events through the school year; week long trips each Summer, focused on youth.  These include Mission Trips to sites around North America, and  ELCA Youth Gatherings (every three years).  In 2012, we had 13 youth and 6 leaders attending the ELCA Youth Gathering in New Orleans. In

2015, we had 4 youth and 2 leaders attending Youth Gathering in Detroit. In 2018, 5

youth and 2 leaders attended the Youth Gathering in Houston. We anticipate including many programs and opportunities for youth during the coming years.

Current planned events include: Mission Trip, Family Mission Weekend, Family Bike Trip, Homeless Night Out, building a Float for Pumpkin Festival.  Watch for details in the Announcer and Sunday Bulletin.
